1083. Jo Browning Wroe -Terrible Kindness

This a wonderful book, about singing, male friendship, and embalming, so an interesting combination.

A talented singer follows his dead father’s career in embalming and having just ‘graduated’ in that profession, hears about the Aberfan disaster and volunteers to go there to help. The plot then bounces back to William’s time as a chorister in Cambridge, his relationship with fellow chorister Martin, and a disastrous performance of Allegri’s ‘Miserere’.

Back in embalming school, William meets and eventually marries Gloria, but is reluctant to have kids due to his Aberfan experience. I haven’t summarised it at all well, but it is a wonderful book.
