1077. Barbara Kingsolver - Demon Copperfield

This is a very long bildungsroman and I found it very hard work. Would probably help if I had any memory of the plot of David Copperfield, of which it is a 21st-century variation.

Demon is a trash kid in modern Kentucky, with a pretty deprived background who drifts around between various foster carers. He eventually ends up with an American football coach, who has an apparently androgynous daughter and becomes a star footballer, but at the same time becomes heavily involved in drugs and opioid addiction. He finds an equally addicted lover, but she eventually dies and towards the end finds apparent love with the daughter of the football coach.

Well written but far too long and repetitive for me.
