1036. Octavia E. Butler - Kindred

Interesting to read this following no.1035.

This is about a contemporary black American woman, married to a white man, who is dragged back about 200 years into America at the height of the slave trade to save the life of a young white American slave trader, a child in the early bits of the book. Once saved she returns to the 20th century but is dragged back whenever he is under threat.

It transpires that they are distantly related, as most of the slave owners had children with the black slaves. Once this premise is established, I did find that it dragged a bit repetitively, but didn’t read it that well as too much sport on the TV.

Towards the end we learn that Rufus, the now adult slave owner, is in love with her, having confused her in some way with his now dead slave wife, possibly her ancestor. She has to kill him to escape this situation, somehow losing her arm as she is sucked back through time to the 20th century.

Probably worth a re-read.
