Book of the year, so worth a re-read.
Beautifully written, with sentences that bounce into quasi-verse and others that begin with one speaker and then elide into another.
Subject matter: painting (as visual as you can get in an un-illustrated book), colonialism, love, loss and betrayal, to list but a few of the interrelated themes. I had missed first time round James’ point to Lloyd that his art is derivative, Lloyd’s response being that all artists steal from each other, but nonetheless he abandons James on the island at the end.
Brilliant, as before.
