Very different and quite strange.
A fictionalised documentary history of a singing duo, Nev a brummie who escapes to the US to pursue rock music, and Opal a black girl from the south who escapes northwards to New York to do the same.
The narrator is the daughter of the drummer in their original band, who was sleeping with Opal and who is murdered in a nasty racist incident at their first big concert. The book follows the couple through their career.
Written very much in the style of a documentary, it was good but I wondered slightly what the point of it was. A commentary on racism in the contemporary US and on gender inequality – lots of well-made points, but I struggled to match these with the story in a coherent way.
