This was on TV recently, a modern adaptation of a book written in the 1950s, so I thought I would read the book. The adaptation changes the book significantly and I think the book was marginally better.
The basic premise is unchanged but in the book, there is some dialogue towards the end between the children and the adults, where it is acknowledged that the two ‘species’ (human and children) are completely incompatible, and will only fight to destroy each other.
It is also clearer in the book that there have been several other episodes of children appearing across the world; most were destroyed by the local populace apart from a Russian event, where the whole town was bombed by the Russians, killing both children and humans.
At the end of this book, Mr Zellaby blows himself and the children up, sacrificing himself but saving the village.
Very good and different.
